2014 Boat Rally

September 20th and 21st

The 21st Whitchurch boat rally has been a very successful event helped enormously by the Ceilidh band Jigsmith playing all weekend.

Thanks to the support of Canal & River Trust we were able to offer boat rides along the Whitchurch Arm and Llangollen Canal.

We were also fortunate to see Richard Parry (Chief Executive of the Canal & River Trust) on Saturday who spent some time talking to visitors and participants.

Red Rum was the guest of honour when the canal was re-opened to Chemistry Bridge in 1993. Unfortunately he couldn’t make it this year so we borrowed a large model horse from S. G. Leathers to go in the stable. With his hay bale and bridle he looked very effective. Made a few heads turn.

The theme for the Best Decorated Boat was, of course, the horse. One boat had Kelpies on the top, but the winner was Cheshire Cat Cruising Company with their training boat nb Little Star.

The Chairman of Shropshire Council, Cllr M. Pate, The Mayor of Whitchurch, Cllr R Hewson and Ian Easby the temporary Manager of CRT Wales and Border Counties did the judging honours.

The shops and businesses in Whitchurch are great supporters by joining as corporate members, advertising along the arm of the canal and offering raffle prizes.

Cllr Hewson also attended the boaters’ supper on Saturday evening. With the horse themed quiz and the drizzle letting up everyone had an enjoyable time.  The meal including a chicken casserole and a pudding followed by a quiz and was provided for boaters and guests.
